What is a DOMAIN NAME?

A domain name is a unique address that identifies a computer or network which is connected to the Internet. USA1WEB.com is an example of a domain name.

Do I need a DOMAIN NAME?

If you want your address to be www.yourname.com you must register your domain name.

How much does a DOMAIN NAME cost?

USA1WEB can file your .COM, .ORG, or .NET domain name with InterNic for a one time fee of $30.00. InterNic will bill you separately for their $70.00 domain name registration fee which covers 2 years (each year after will be billed @ $35.00 per year or InterNic's prevailing rate is at the time of renewal.)

Who is InterNic?

InterNic is the governing body of .COM, .NET, and .ORG domain names. They have the government contract for domain name administration until at least April, 1999. This means everyone who purchases a .COM, .NET, or .ORG domain must go through InterNic for now.

What are the differences between your "levels" of HOSTING?

The main differences between our hosting levels are found in the amount of disk space you are provided with, the amount of transfer you are allowed, and the number of e-mail accounts included.

What level should I start with?

This is a decision you must make for yourself based on both the amount of exposure you plan to give your site as well as the amount of information you have for your site. Due to the generous disk space limits USA1WEB gives, most sites start with our Level 1 package. Upgrading is a breeze and you only pay the difference in setup fees from one level to the next when upgrading.

Can I SPAM and send unsolicited messages if I host with you?

NO! USA1WEB is 100% AGAINST SPAM! If you are caught spamming, your account with us will be terminated. There are much better ways of bringing GOOD traffic to your site.

Can I host with you if I send out a newsletter to my subscribers each month?

If the people you are mailing TRUELY did signup to receive your newsletter, then it is ok. If people complain that the newsletter you are sending them is unsolicited SPAM, there will be problems.

What terms are available?

You must signup for one (1) year minimum.

What if I cancel my account? Do you give refunds?

You may cancel your account at any time. However, we will only refund any full months left.

What web server software does your virtual hosting servers run?

Our virtual hosting servers run the version 1.3.1 of Apache WebServer for Linux.

How many pages can I fit in 10 Megabytes?

The average web page, including HTML and graphics is ranges from approximately 20k to 100k depending mostly on the amount of graphics in your pages. This allows you to have approximately 100 to 500 pages in 10 megabytes of space.

If you can fit so many pages in 10 megabytes, why does your smallest package START with 100 megabyts?

We offer an overly generous amount of disk simply so that YOU don't have to worry about it.

Do you provide scheduled backups?

Yes. We do backup all servers regularly. Backups are guaranteed to be kept weekly for at least one month. There is, of course, no guarantee that a backup will not be corrupted (one of the reasons we keep multiple weeks on hand).

Is there a fee if I need to retrieve a backup and how long will it take?

Yes. We charge $25 to retrieve a backup of your account for you. We will make every attempt to have your backup to you as soon as possible.

Do you have any restrictions on the content we put on our site?

USA1WEB's only true content restriction is that we do not directly host adult entertainment sites.

What type of E-MAIL accounts do I get with my hosting account?

With your hosting account, you have the option of choosing either e-mail forwarding or POP3 e-mail accounts. The number of accounts that are included in your monthly web site hosting fee is based on the level of the account you purchase.

What is E-MAIL FORWARDING?

If you move, you fill out a card for the US Postal Service. This card tells them to forward all mail from your old address, to your new address. This same idea can be applied to electronic mail. We can forward all e-mail from your domain name to your current e-mail account.

What is a POP3 E-MAIL BOX?

A POP3 account is equivalent to a "PO Box" on the 'Net! It is a separate e-mail box to which you connect over the Internet. You still need dialup Internet access connection to reach your POP3 e-mail box.

What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is the most popular way for transferring files across the Internet.

Where do I get an FTP CLIENT?

To start with, an FTP client is a program that use the internet "File Transfer Protocol" (or FTP) to send or receive files. USA1WEB will accept connections from ANY FTP client, or file transfer client which uses the FTP protocol. Mant FTP Clients are available for free on the Internet.

I have a Mac. How do I get my files to and from you?

Mac's use a program called "Fetch" to FTP files to and from servers. We do not offer technical support for this software, but we do have a few Mac clients and they use fetch with no problems on our servers.

What is a TRANSFER LIMIT?

A TRANSFER LIMIT is the amount of information that you may transmit from your site. In other words, each time a picture or HTML page is viewed by a visitor, it uses a little bit of your transfer limit.

How many HITS will my TRANSFER LIMIT allow me?

The average HIT is approxiamtely 10k. This would mean that a transfer limit of 1.0 Gigabyte would allow 100,000 hits, a limit of 2.5 Gigabytes would allow 250,000 hits, and a limit of 5.0 Gigabytes would allow 500,000 hits.

Is the TRANSFER limit a daily or monthly limit?

The TRANSFER LIMIT is based on MONTHLY transfer.

Why don't you offer UNLIMITED transfer?

There really is no such thing as unlimited transfer. Hosting services that offer unlimited transfer realize that a web server can only output so much data - which means it's not really unlimited. Based on their fees, they will place enough web sites on a single server so they may profit from the bandwidth that the server may use. This can make your web pages extremely slow since the server is being pushed to its limit.

What happens if I go over my TRANSFER limit?

Our transfer limits are more than adequate for 95% of the sites we host. Unless you plan on streaming audio and/or video or banner advertising with Yahoo! and other search engines, you should not go over your limit. However, if you do, we will simply bill you for the additional bandwidth you use.

What types of multimedia files will your servers support?

Our servers will support files such as MP3 (.mp3), MIDI (.mid), Vivo (.viv), Waves (.wav), AVI (.avi), QuickTime Movies (.mov), Shockwave, Flash, and many others.
